COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The course is designed to provide students with the necessary
knowledge about organ transplantation and the
transplantation process. The ability to communicate with
relatives of potential donors is essential in organ donation. It
is important to understand the patients requiring
transplantation, necessary for them to survive or improve
their quality of life.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completing the course, students will be able to:
• define terms related to transplantation
• comprehend the concept of brain death
• describe the process of brain death
• demonstrate skills in educating a potential donor’s family about brain death
• demonstrate communication skills used when approaching a potential donor’s family, in order to
obtain organ donation consent
• describe the coordinating transplantation process
• describe the surgical procedure of organ transplants and the nurse’s role
• identify the care of the recipient and possible complications
• assess the importance of histocompatibility and its importance in transplants
• identify the issues regarding organ donation and make informed choices
• comprehend the benefits of organ transplantation and as future health care professionals
promote the idea of organ donation
