The Department of Nursing of the University of Patras is operating a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Program for the academic year 2020-2021.
Aim
Doctoral studies aim at the development of high quality and modern scientific research, as well as training scientists capable of contributing to the progress and development of science and basic research in both Nursing and related health sciences. Graduates of the doctoral studies programs are intended to work in the field of research, administration and education within the country and abroad. At the same time, the postgraduate research program is considered a source of academic prestige, international academic distinction and contributes to the qualitative and quantitative upgrade of research for the Department, as well as the University.
Eligible PhD candidates should hold:
a) a University degree [(University or Technological Educational Institute (TEI)] from Greece or abroad from an equivalent and recognized institution.
b) a Postgraduate degree (University Master’s Degree) from Greece or from abroad from an equivalent recognized institution.
c) In exceptional cases (such as for example exceptional scientific level and quality publication or patent), and after a justified decision of the Departments’ General Assembly a PhD candidate can be accepted even if the candidate lacks a Diploma of Postgraduate Studies (University Master’s Degree). Graduates of TEI, School of Pedagogical and Technological Education (ASPETE) or equivalent schools can be accepted as PhD candidates only if they have completed a Diploma of Postgraduate Studies (University Master’s Degree). Especially for PhD candidates who have not completed a University Master’s Degree, the duration of their doctoral studies will be a minimum of 4 years.
d) PhD candidates who are accepted without having previously completed a University Master’s Degree are obliged to complete a series of courses related to the subject of the proposed thesis, lasting a maximum of 3 semesters. These courses are defined by the Departments’ General Assembly. Compulsory course attendance time is calculated as the minimum time for obtaining a doctorate.
Duration of Studies
The time period for obtaining the doctoral degree cannot be less than three (3) full calendar years from the date of appointment of the Three-Member Advisory Committee. The maximum duration within the Doctoral Program is set at eight (8) years after the date of appointment of the Three-Member Advisory Committee (plus the periods that the student is justifiably absent from the Program due to illness or other serious reason, upon approval of the Departments’ General Assembly).
Upon completion of the three (3) years, justification is needed from the Three-Member Advisory Committee, as well as the submission of a schedule that documents the possibility of completion in a maximum of five (5) years. Especially for PhD candidates who are admitted without a University Master’s Degree, the minimum time limit for obtaining a doctoral degree is at least four (4) full calendar years from the appointment of the Three-Member Advisory Committee. In this case, the maximum stay of the student in the program is set at four plus four (4 + 4) years after the date of appointment of the Three-Member Advisory Committee.
The PhD candidate is entitled to request suspension of studies once during his / her studies for exceptional cases upon his / her application to the Departments’ General Assembly. The Departments’ General Assembly decides on the importance of the reasons for the requested suspension and, if accepted, determines the exact period of suspension after which the PhD candidate can continue his / her studies according to the new valid conditions. Otherwise, the PhD candidate is removed from the doctoral program. During suspension of studies, all benefits are revoked, which are recovered when requested again by the interested party.
Modification of the topic of the doctoral thesis within the same research / thematic area can be done upon approval of the Three-Member Advisory Committee and the Departments’ General Assembly.
Changing the subject of the doctoral thesis and defining a new one in a different research / thematic field, can be done at the request of the PhD candidate and upon approval of the Departments’ General Assembly, and consent of the Three-Member Advisory Committee. In this case, a new Three-member Advisory Committee is appointed by the Departments’ General Assembly and the minimum time for the preparation of the thesis starts from the date of the appointment of the new Three-Member Advisory Committee.
